Apologies for the potatoery. Just posting some quick photos of the new wheels for the Ranchero. Above: can the original hubcaps be made to fit new cast mags? Yes.

Kinja'd!!!

There are three types of wheel in play - American Racing, ION, and Ultra Wheel. Three manufacturers for the front wheels, the rear wheels, and the spare. Except not really, because they all came from the same Chinese supplier. Apart from the holes in the front ones, they’re identical.

Kinja'd!!!

Here we have the spare (a 4" wheel) and one of the fronts. The spare is a 15x4, the fronts are 14x6. The rears are 15x7.

Kinja'd!!!

Mmmm, meaty. Yes, this actually will fit a tire with minimal edge trimming, but just barely.

Kinja'd!!!

Due to being a 15" wheel, there’s a 1/2" gap around the hubcap in back (WORST POTATO PIC OF THE DAY). No matter, the caps will attach the same way - VW hubcap clips. Cheap and effective.

Kinja'd!!!

Meanwhile, I also have my QA1s for up front. Hon hon hon.

This style of wheel was pretty much my only option to go for a steelie-ish aluminum that could be used with or without my original caps. I’m leaning toward using them clean without the original caps and with plastidip on part of the web with the dog dishes on, but all the same, it’s kind of a unique look with everything in supershine.

Yeah, they look really nice. I always liked steelies.

Both the wheels and shocks look great. QA1 makes a good shock. Are they adjustable?

Not adjustable, I’m afraid. I can get within a half inch of those in an adjustable, but for my needs right at that moment cost-wise, spring-wise, and for landing right perfectly in the middle of what I think my needed length is gonna be, it was these.

I don’t think it matters anyway if you aren’t going to drag the truck seriously or whatever.

Actually, I’m at work right now so I could dimension the upper mounts and get them worked out in AutoCAD - just finished. We’ll see how they work when I make them.

I’m still not sure if these will look better plain, with a black plasti-dip on the web, or with kind of a cream/almond on the web. Only one way to find out, I suppose.

Having the ability to tap into such a huge spring database is cool too.

I’m starting out reasonably stiff. 400lb/in. It’s got springs in the back that are so stiff I really need to swap them, I’ve got very little travel in the C/O, and the front movement ratio is nearly 2:1 - so erring on the side of caution doesn’t hurt.

I figured they would, but I actually missed a trick on this one - I checked the wheel hole pattern to make sure the holes would be covered by the cap, but I did it based on the 15" size of the wheel. So here I was, fingers crossed as to whether it would work, and because the actual wheel was a 14", the cap centers over and covers the holes better than I had any idea it would. If I’d been wrong in the other direction I would have looked really dumb, but I got lucky.

are you going to polish up the outer lip of the wheel, like a trim ring?

that looking dumb thing.........nah. just means innovating a dumb solution to a stupid problem. car is really taking shape.

Yep; polished outer edge, painted or Plasti Dip’ed web is the current plan. A little Simichrome or Mothers’ mag polish and both the cap and the outer ring will shine like a mirror. I kind of need to work on the dents in the hubcaps a little bit first, of course.
